Set Up People Counting Event

Configure a people counting event to detect the number of people staying in designated areas. Add an optional face area to automatically authenticate enrolled users.

When to use this?

  • When you want to monitor visitor counts in real time for a retail store or a specific area of a store.

  • When you want to track the number of people in a specific area for crowd management.

  • When you want to track entry and exit status for registered staff and VIP customers.

  • When you want to manage access statistics for a specific area for security purposes.

Create people counting event.

After creating a people counting event, the Live menu detects the number of people staying in designated areas. Also, setting a face area prioritizes face tracking in that area; enrolled users are automatically identified.

Start event creation

  1. Click Settings in the upper-left of the screen.

  2. Click AI & RuleAI Analysis in the left sidebar.

  3. Click + Add at the top right of the screen.

  4. Click People Counting in the Select AI Analysis Type window.

  5. When the Notice and Consent for Activation of Vionyx Facial Recognition Function pop-up appears, review the details, select the consent checkbox, and click Agree and Activate Facial Recognition.

    • To use the Facial Authentication feature, comply with local regulations. Cannot proceed without consent.

    • The Notice and Consent for Activation of Vionyx Facial Recognition Function popup appears only once. Subsequent AI event creation assumes consent.

  6. Complete the required settings in the right People Counting panel.

Set event name

Enter the AI event name in the Name input field. The name can be up to 64 characters long.

Counting area setup

Set counting areas in Live View. The camera counts people within configured counting areas in real time and triggers events. Set at least one virtual line. Click + Add to add up to 10. Drag the corners or points of the counting area box in Live View to reshape it. Drag the center to move the line.

  • Name: Edit the counting area's name. Assign a clear, descriptive name. The counting area's name appears on hover in Live View.

  • Color: Select the counting area's color. The counting area appears in the selected color in Live View.

  • Condition: Set the event trigger condition.

    • Every Change: Trigger an event whenever a person enters or leaves the counting area

    • Count Limit: Trigger an event when the number of people in the counting area exceeds the specified value (default: 10 people, maximum: 100 people)

  • Duration: Set the minimum time the count in the counting area must satisfy the event condition. For example, if Duration is set to 5 seconds, a person must remain in the counting area for at least 5 seconds to trigger the event. It can be set up to a maximum of 60 seconds.

  • Click reset to reset the configured counting area's shape and size.

  • Click delete to delete the added counting area.

Face area settings (optional)

Define the area for face detection. When set, the system prioritizes face tracking in that area. Face areas and counting areas can overlap. Click + Add to add up to 10 face areas. A blue box appears in Live View; drag corners or points to adjust the shape. Drag the center to move the line.

  • Name: Edit the face area's name. Assign a clear, descriptive name. The face area name appears on hover in Live View.

  • Enrolled users are automatically identified in the Live menu and shown by name. Unenrolled users appear as Unknown Face.

  • Click reset to reset the configured face area's shape and size.

  • Click delete to delete an added face area.

Counting reset settings

Set the condition to reset the people count in counting areas.

  • All Areas Count Reset: Set to On to reset counts for all counting areas at the scheduled time. Counts for all counting areas reset at the time set in Reset Time.

Save settings

After completing all settings, click Save in the upper-right. The interface returns to the previous screen, and the new AI event is added to the list.

Check in Live

Click the Live menu at the top left of the screen. Confirm the AI On icon at the top right of the camera feed is on. Configured counting and face areas appear as overlays on the video. Displays the number of people in the counting area in the format Count : N. If face areas are set, the camera detects faces there; enrolled users are automatically identified and their names are displayed.

  • To reset the count manually, click MoreCount Reset.

  • Unenrolled users appear as Unknown Face. Enrolled users appear with their name.

  • Poor lighting or backlight may prevent the camera from detecting faces. Improve area lighting or adjust the camera position and angle so faces are clearly visible.

  • Faces must face the camera to be detected. Profile or rear views may not be detected.

  • If too many events occur, adjust the Every Delay option. Increasing the event delay reduces event frequency.
